Key Steps for a Smooth Day Trip
To make your day trip from Hong Kong to Shenzhen successful, you need to complete three essential tasks before leaving: confirm your entry eligibility, fill out the online arrival card, and set up payment and map apps on your phone. The border crossings have specific closing times, and you cannot use cash or foreign currency at the metro gates. Google Maps does not work in China.
Choose your border crossing based on your destination:
- For Huaqiang North (华强北) and Futian CBD, use Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (福田口岸).
- For Luohu Commercial City and the old town, use Lo Wu (罗湖口岸).
Border Crossing Times and Planning Backwards
The border crossings have specific opening and closing times. Plan your return time by working backwards from the closing times:
- Lo Wu (罗湖): 6:30 am – midnight
- Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (福田口岸): 6:30 am – 10:30 pm
- Lok Ma Chau (车辆/跨境巴士): 24 hours
- Shenzhen Bay (深圳湾): 6:30 am – midnight
- Heung Yuen Wai (香园围): 7:00 am – 10:00 pm
- Man Kam To (文锦渡): 7:00 am – 10:00 pm
- Sha Tau Kok (沙头角): Closed for now
- Express Rail Link West Kowloon (高铁西九龙): 6:30 am – 11:30 pm
For example, if you are using Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, plan to be back at the border by 10:30 pm. If you miss it, you may need to use the 24-hour Lok Ma Chau crossing or stay overnight.
Check the official Hong Kong Immigration Department's control points page for the latest information.
Connecting to Shenzhen Metro
After crossing the border, you can connect to the Shenzhen Metro as follows:
- Lo Wu (罗湖) connects to Luohu Station (罗湖站, Line 1)
- Lok Ma Chau Spur Line (福田口岸) connects to Futian Checkpoint Station (福田口岸站, Line 4)
- Huaqiang North (华强北) is served by Huaqiang North Station (华强北, Lines 2 and 7), not to be confused with Huaqiang Road Station (华强路, Line 1)
Use Amap Global (iOS: Download Amap Global, Android: Search for AMap Global on Google Play) to find the most accurate routes. Typically, one transfer and 20-30 minutes of travel time are required.
Paying for the Shenzhen Metro
Shenzhen Metro ticket machines and counters accept RMB cash (self-service machines accept 1 RMB coins and 5/10 RMB notes). However, the gates do not accept cash or foreign currency. Starting from 2026, international cards will be accepted directly at the gates. Here are three ways to pay:
- Use Alipay or WeChat, switch the city to Shenzhen, and open the Shenzhen Tong QR code to scan at the gate. Download Alipay from Alipay's official site and WeChat from WeChat's official site.
- Buy a physical Shenzhen Tong card at the counter, with a 20 RMB refundable deposit. This card offers about a 95% discount.
- Some stations have smart POS machines that accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and JCB for single-ride tickets. Check the current options at the station.
For more details, refer to Express Transit's guide on Shenzhen Metro and HK My Travel's guide.
Filling Out the Arrival Card
Starting from November 20, 2025, foreigners can fill out the arrival card online via the National Immigration Administration's platform. You can fill it out up to 3 days before your arrival. If you haven't filled it out, you can scan a QR code at the border or fill out a paper card.
Be cautious of phishing websites. Only use the official National Immigration Administration's website. Do not pay any fees for filling out the form.
For more information, see the National Immigration Administration's official guidance.
Checking Your Entry Eligibility
Many countries' citizens can enter visa-free for 30 days. There is also a 240-hour transit visa-free policy covering the Greater Bay Area. Some Shenzhen border crossings offer a 5-day special economic zone visa, but the application windows and times vary and can change.
Verify your entry eligibility on the China 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Checker and the National Immigration Administration's website.
Important Tips Before Returning
Before returning, keep these two things in mind:
- Power banks: As of June 28, 2025, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) prohibits carrying power banks without clear 3C certification or those recalled. Ensure your power bank has a 3C mark. For more details, see CAAC's official announcement.
- Tax refunds: You can apply for a tax refund if you spend over 200 RMB at a designated tax refund store on the same day. However, regular market stalls are not tax refund stores. For more information, see the Chinese government's official news.
Preparing Your Phone Before Departure
Complete these steps the night before your trip:
- Fill out the online arrival card via the official National Immigration Administration's website.
- Download Amap Global (iOS: Download Amap Global, Android: Search for AMap Global on Google Play). Search for `华强北` and save the location in your favorites. Use the Chinese name for searches.
- Set up Alipay (Alipay's official site) or WeChat (WeChat's official site). Add a Visa or Mastercard and upload your passport for verification. Verification usually takes a few minutes but can take up to 72 hours.
- Note the closing time of the border crossing you plan to use and set a reminder on your phone.
For detailed instructions on setting up WeChat, see China Survival Kit's WeChat setup guide. For using QR codes, see Trip.com's guide on WeChat QR codes.
For binding a foreign card to Alipay, follow Alipay's official site: Me > Bank Cards > add card. For WeChat, see China Navigators' guide on WeChat Pay for foreigners.
For maps, use Amap Global (iOS: Download Amap Global, Android: Search for AMap Global on Google Play). Follow the official English guide for usage. Google Maps does not work in China.
For translation, use Apple Translate, Microsoft Translator, Baidu Translate, or Youdao. Google Translate stopped service in China in October 2022. For more details, see China Survival Kit's guide on translation apps.
For ride-hailing, download Didi Chuxing (iOS: Download Didi Chuxing, Android: Download Didi Chuxing). Do not install DiDi Rider, which is for overseas use only.
For internet access, buy an eSIM or a local SIM card upon arrival. See Trip.com's guide on getting a SIM card in China and China Guidelines' guide.
Additional Entry Path: Group Tour Visa-Free Policy
If you are already in Hong Kong or Macau, you can enter Guangdong Province visa-free as part of a tour group. This policy applies to citizens of countries with diplomatic relations with China. You must join a tour group organized by a registered travel agency in Hong Kong or Macau (minimum 2 people) and enter and exit as a group. You can stay for up to 6 days in the 10 cities of the Greater Bay Area (Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhaoqing, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Shantou).
For more details, see the National Immigration Administration's official policy.
Remember:
- This policy requires joining a registered tour group and entering and exiting as a group.
- It is only for those already in Hong Kong or Macau, not for direct flights from other countries.
- You must stay within the 10 specified cities and exit within 6 days.
