Who Should Visit Shenzhen and Who Shouldn't
Shenzhen is ideal for two types of travelers: those interested in hardware and manufacturing (like Huaqiangbei, electronics supply chains, drones, and consumer electronics), and those who want to experience a modern Chinese city with minimal hassle (just an hour from Hong Kong, excellent metro coverage, new and clean streets, and plenty of parks and coastlines).
If you are looking for historical sites and ancient architecture, Shenzhen may not be the best choice. The city was established as a special economic zone in 1980, so it lacks the historical depth found in cities like Beijing, Xi'an, or Suzhou.
In one day, you can haggle over components at an electronics counter and enjoy a sunset on a coastal promenade. Shenzhen's value lies in its density and the unique blend of experiences it offers.
What Makes Shenzhen Unique
Huaqiangbei is one of the world's densest electronics and component trading areas. The market is open from approximately 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM, with components on lower floors and complete devices on upper floors. To get there, take the subway to Huaqiang North Station (华强北) on Line 2 or 7.

Preparation Costs and Steps
- Install AMap Global: Google Maps does not work for navigation in China. Download AMap Global (iOS: AMap Global on App Store, Android: search for AMap Global on Google Play). Always use the Chinese name when searching for locations.
- Set Up Alipay and WeChat Pay: Both Alipay (Alipay official website) and WeChat (WeChat official website) support foreign cards and passports. Verification usually takes minutes but can take up to 72 hours, so do this before you fly.
- Pay for Metro Rides: You can use cash at ticket machines and service windows, which accept 1 yuan coins and 5/10 yuan notes. However, the gates themselves do not accept cash. Use a QR code from Alipay or WeChat, a Shenzhen Tong card (refundable deposit of ¥20, about 95% discount), or from 2026, international cards like Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, and UnionPay directly: Express Transit in Shenzhen.

Traveling from Hong Kong
From Hong Kong, traveling to Shenzhen is straightforward. The MTR East Rail Line connects Lo Wu Station to Luohu Port and Lok Ma Chau Station to Futian Port. The operating hours are 6:30 AM to midnight for Lo Wu and 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM for Lok Ma Chau: MTR Services to/from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau.

Shopping and Refunds

How Long to Stay and When to Visit
